Flanagan started her career in television at KCCO-TV in Alexandria, Minnesota where she was assigned the role of general assignment news reporter and weekend anchor. In 1998, Bruce Fraser, a long time friend and former teammate of Flanagan’s husband, assisted her in securing an interview with a neighbor who worked for Fox.
Flanagan was given the position of a reporter for the National Sports Report and a producer for Joe Buck’s and Chris Myers’ weekly sports investigative magazine show Goin’ Deep.
She left Fox Sports in 2000 to work for ESPN, where she spent half a decade reporting from the college football sidelines. She co-hosted the Home Depot College Football Awards and created an entertainment-themed feature for SportsCenter called “Hollywood Highlights.”
