Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Politician

AOC began working as a bartender and waitress after graduating from Boston University to support her family. She then got a job as an organizer for Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign in 2016.

She was inspired to work for her own community when she saw her fellow youths “putting their whole lives and everything that they had on the line for the protection of their community”.

AOC then began her campaign in April 2017 after realizing that someone does not need power, wealth, or social influence to successfully run for office. She campaigned at the same time working as a waitress and tending bar at Flats Fix, a taqueria in New York City’s Union Square.

With finance being the biggest challenge in her campaign, she had to use another strategy to beat Joe Crowley who had been the US Representative for over 10 terms.

She campaigned from the ground engaging people of the community on her campaign. She was endorsed by a number of civil rights organizations such as MoveOn and Democracy for America.

Cortez received 57.13% of the vote (15,897) to Crowley’s 42.5% (11,761), defeating the 10-term incumbent by almost 15 percentage points on June 26, 2018. The result shocked many political commentators and analysts and immediately garnered nationwide attention.

In the general elections, Cortez faced Republican nominee Anthony Pappas and easily won the election with 78% of the vote (110,318) to Pappas’s 14% (17,762).
