Andre Bernier Career
Bernier’s fascination with meteorology began when he was four years old, whenever he spotted dark clouds from a storm that was about to arrive. Little did he know that he would end up knowing everything related to the weather.
However, while growing up in New England, he developed an especially strong preference for winter snowstorms and the well-known “nor’easter.” Bernier began his broadcast career at the age of 16 when he started sending out weekend weather reports to his hometown radio station, WBSM-AM.
He polished his broadcasting skill sets with the patient guidance of several mentors, including Stann Lipp of WBSM, Jim Loomis, Dick Stevens, and newsman Jim Phillips (who can still be heard on WBSM).
He also continued to educate himself in synoptic meteorology (forecasting) by working as the late Charlie Taylor’s assistant at WLNE-TV, whose studios were still located in New Bedford in the 1970s.
Bernier relocated to Minneapolis in 1985 and landed a job at WWTC-AM, the only commercial AM radio station in the country to try an all-weather format. He also worked at Northwest Airlines, and eventually KARE-TV, Minneapolis, where he eventually joined his wife for the weekday morning newscasts.
Bernier and his family relocated to Cleveland in 1988, the same year he started working at WJW channel 8 as the morning meteorologist. In 2007, he switched to evening shifts.
