Who was Bobby O’Jay?

Bobby O’Jay was an American radio host and Memphis DJ. He was popularly known as the ‘King of Memphis radio’ who hosted the “Fun Morning Show” on IHeartMedia’s WDIA. Bobby has been working at WDIA since 1983 and was inducted into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame in 2021. He died in May 3 2022 while at work.

On Tuesday, May 2, the family of Bobby announced that he had died unexpectedly after hosting his show.

“We’re doing as well as can be expected,” O’Jay’s niece Wanda Thomas told the local news outlet. “We just listened to him this morning, you know, and he sounded like the picture of health. It’s a process.”

Memphis mayor Jim Strickland reacted to O’Jay’s death on Twitter.

“I’m very sorry to learn about the passing of Bobby O’Jay. I know for many Memphians, including my wife, the day was not complete unless they tuned in to hear what Bobby had to say,” he wrote.

Bobby’s cause of death has not yet been released by the authorities and family.

Bobby was born and raised in  Batesville, Mississippi in 1953. He was raised alongside nine siblings. His niece Wanda Thomas spoke highly of Bobby saying;

“He was our ‘I want to be just like him when I get grown.’ He was our celebrity,” “Our chain has definitely been broken. My fond memories are what’s going to keep us, get us through this time.”

Bobby was married to his new wife Kim in 2020. However, not much information about his wife is known to the public as she lives a private life.

O’Jay’s wife Sharon O’Jay died in July 2017. Sharon was like his better =half and her death really devastated Bobby. Sources close to him spoke highly of Sharon said;

“When people say my better half, Bobby was inseparable from his wife. She was his other half. Anybody who were friends or colleagues know they meant the world to each other. It is tough. Her opinion meant a lot to him and to WDIA listeners. People felt like she was a part of the radio station and they got to get to know her as well.”

Bobby has worked at WDIA for over four decades. He joined WDIA in 1983 and has worked through different ranks to become the host of the “Fun Morning Show”. He was referred to as the ‘King of Memphis radio’ due to his contribution to radio.

O’Jay was also inducted into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame in 2021 and nominated for the National Radio Hall of Fame. He was also honored by iHeartMedia Memphis in 2018.
