What Type of Cancer Does Boyd Huppert Have?
Boyd Huppert was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare type of blood cancer, in 2021. His diagnosis was revealed in an interview with Randy Shaver, a KARE 11 broadcaster and long-time colleague. The interview was conducted as part of the Land of 10,000 Stories segment on October 31, 2021.
This blood cancer has no permanent solution for treatment and the idea to put a patient into remission is harsh. Boyd was just a few weeks away from undergoing his transplant of bone marrow on May 23, 2022. It seemed that his worst nightmare was on the way coming after a difficult eight months of chemotherapy sessions to put his multiple myeloma into relapse in order to prepare for that life-saving bone marrow transplant.
Nine days before, 6.3 million stem cells were extracted from his body, frozen, and then reintroduced to his body only after he underwent aggressive chemotherapy. He was given a fresh start in life after the new stem cells restored the bone marrow that had been destroyed by cancer and the treatment process.
Boyd said, “April 15 will always be my second birthday. The clock started ticking that day. I’m regaining my life and the opportunity of spending more time with my family. So that is a date that will be celebrated every year in our house.”
But, through all this, Boyd has been a warrior for a very many reasons, both big and small. Tess, his new grandchild, was introduced to him just days before the transplant. His immune system was destroyed by the transplant, and he will need to be protected for everything, including COVID, in the coming years.
