Breanna Gill | Women’s Classic Tournament
Breanna Gill took home the Australian Women’s Classic trophy at NSW’s Bonville course on April 2, 2023, after an exciting play-off. What was meant to be an exciting moment for the Australian golfer was ruined by death threats and anti-trans slurs!
Her joy soon gave way to sadness after receiving the horrible messages on her social media accounts, which she eventually deleted because she was worried about her safety.
WPGA posted a tweet that gained over 7 million views and thousands of replies the following day. The majority of the comments were unkind, and a source who viewed the messages sent to Gill described it as a targeted attack.
Although her gender identity was not mentioned in the tweet, several accounts, notably US professional golfer Hailey Ostrom, criticized the possibility of a transgender woman winning a women’s golf competition.
As a result, Gill deleted her Twitter and Instagram accounts. In an effort to lessen the harassment, the WPGA also deleted its tweet against her and made the account private.
According to Lunn, the tournament removed the tweets out of concern for Gill’s well-being. She claimed that other WPGA governing members and she had both received death threats.
All seven of the major international women’s golf tours have come up with a policy that welcomes transgender golfers, and the WPGA has done so since 2004.
The athletes must comply with the demands of the policy which requires them to have gone through gender reassignment surgery, use hormonal therapy for at least a year, and present official documents to recognize their new gender.
The WPGA reserves the right to determine whether or not those circumstances are appropriate and acceptable. Gill met all the eligibility requirements, according to Lunn.
She continued by saying that none of the 300 members of the group had ever had an issue with Gill’s membership or participation in competitions.
Gill had competed professionally in women’s tournaments for eight years, and her victory at Bonville, where she was showered with champagne by her rivals, marked her first title victory.
