Byron Castillo Fake Passport Scandal
Just a few months before the World Cup begins, the nationality issue of Byron has emerged again and Ecuador might well be expelled. This comes amid allegations that Byron Castillo, used a false Ecuadorian passport while supposedly being a Colombian citizen.
The Mail claims to have found further proof of a cover-up by the Ecuadorian FA (FEF) in the wake of a FIFA investigation into Castillo’s nationality. The right-back for Mexican team Leon is being investigated by the world governing body to determine whether he was born in Colombia or Ecuador.
He has 10 caps for Ecuador, and this year, he helped the country get to the World Cup finals in Qatar. The Mail, however, alleges that it has an audio tape from four years ago of Castillo identifying himself as the person whose name corresponds to his purported Colombian birth certificate.

Additionally, he claims that he was born THREE years earlier than indicated on his Ecuadorian birth certificate. Castillo is heard speaking about moving from Colombia to Ecuador to pursue a career in football, according to The Mail.
And Castillo also names an Ecuadorian businessman who allegedly gave him his new identity. The Mail’s audio of Castillo could have major repercussions for Ecuador’s World Cup hopes.

Rival South American nation Chile was the first to openly complain to FIFA earlier this year about their concerns surrounding his nationality. FIFA rejected the complaint in June, but according to the Mail, new evidence may be utilized before the Appeals Commission makes a decision on Thursday September 15, 2022.
