She began working for ESPN as the new anchor of the live chat program First Take on ESPN2 on October 1st, 2012. Heidi Watney and Jemele Hill hired her for this role.

Her media debut for ESPN came on November 4, 2014, during which she interviewed and spoke with American football quarterback Cam Newton for a feature for E:60 after presenting story ideas to the network. Comedian Artie Lange mockingly represented himself and Champion in a sexual dream set during slavery, and on that same day, he tweeted racist and sexist remarks about her.
The next day, Lange tweeted apologies to her, and ESPN criticized them in an open letter to Sports Illustrated. Champion chose not to respond publicly. She left ESPN in February 2020 after working there for over eight years.
