Brittney was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport in February 2022 while she was traveling to join the squad because a customs dog discovered cocaine in the player’s carry-on luggage.
Officers found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil when they inspected the luggage, and Brittney was arrested and accused of bringing “narcotic drugs” to Russia, where marijuana is prohibited.
The news of Brittney’s detention didn’t reach American shores until March 5. That same day, Cherelle shared an Instagram post in which she expressed her gratitude to “everyone who has reached out” to her on her “wife’s safe return from Russia.”
As Brittney was being held captive in a Russian prison, Cherelle begged President Joe Biden for assistance. She talked openly about how helpless she felt while she waited for government representatives to ensure that Brittney was released.
In September 2022, President Biden met with Cherelle in the Oval Office to talk about her wife’s release from jail. She posted a photo on Instagram from their time together along with a note thanking him for his assistance and support after their time together.
Brittney was freed from Russian custody as part of a prisoner exchange for international arms trader Viktor Bout on December 8. After hearing the news that the WNBA star had been released from Russian captivity, Cherelle said during a White House press conference that her “family is whole” again.
