The statement from the family read; “It is with the most heart wrenching and deepest sadness to inform you Cherry Valentine has tragically passed away.”

“This will come as a profound shock to most people and we understand there is no easy way for this to be announced.” The statement continues…

“As his family, we are still processing his death and our lives will never be the same. We understand how much he is loved and how many lives he has inspired and touched. All we ask is for your patience and your prayers in this time.”

Until her untimely death, Cherry was not married. She stated that “In the Traveller community, there’s a lot of pressure on young people to marry, to settle down, to have a family and to get a job to support the family” and that when she grew up, she did not believe that being a drag performer would be a viable career.

Valentine has been a drag performer since 2018. She has been a qualified mental health nurse since 2015 and was still employed by the NHS, as well as assisting with the UK’s COVID-19 vaccine deployment.

She was a Traveller who was inspired to become a drag performer by the “fabulous” women in her family.

Valentine discussed her upbringing on Drag Race UK, saying she grew raised in a conservative home where drag was not accepted, and that she hid her Traveller ethnicity in the LGBTQIA+ community for fear of “hatred or retaliation.”

She told Sister Sister, another candidate, that “Growing up gay had an impact on me. I don’t think I was absolutely insane.” Valentine hoped that sharing her story would serve as a reminder that LGBTQIA+ persons can be found anywhere.
