Chuck Bell NBC 4
Chuck joined the News4 StormTeam4 in October 2004 as a broadcast meteorologist. He was brought up in areas around Atlanta and was obsessed with the weather from an early age.
His first vivid memory of weather is from April 4, 1974, when he was in grade one and spent the entire afternoon in the corridor “duck and cover” as tornado-producing storms rumbled overhead.
From that moment, he developed a keen interest in everything related to weather. After spending years storm-chasing from Texas to South Dakota and working as an intern at TV stations in Boston, Atlanta, and Oklahoma City, it was finally time to go on the air.
Prior to joining NBC4, Bell worked as a broadcaster in Albany, Georgia, Greenville, South Carolina, Roanoke, Virginia, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. One of his favorite weather occurrences was the first “Storm of the Century,” a storm in March 1993 that devastated most of the East Coast and the Western Carolinas.
His most memorable weather experience was covering the May 3, 1999 tornado outbreak while working for KOKH-TV in Oklahoma City. More than 60 tornadoes struck central Oklahoma on that horrible day, causing 1.9 billion dollars in damage and the deaths of 50 people.
For nearly nine hours straight, Bell and his coworkers at KOKH covered the storms nonstop. On June 23, 1999, Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating gave him the “Governor’s Humanitarian Award for Outstanding Service” in recognition of his efforts.
