Melvin began his career as a high school student at NBC affiliate WIS-TV in Columbia, South Carolina, where he worked as an “Our Generation Reporter” from 1995 to 1997.
Soon after graduation, he decided to return to WIS in July 2001 as a news photographer and producer before landing a role as a reporter for the channel’s morning news team, where he produced his “Craig Cam” live pieces.
He was eventually advanced to a news anchor for the weekend morning and evening newscasts before taking over the weekday newscasts. Melvin departed WIS-TV in July 2008 to work for NBC’s affiliated station in Washington, D.C., WRC-TV, where he anchored the weekend evening newscasts.
He left WRC-TV in July 2011 to join MSNBC as a daytime anchor, while still making contributions to NBC News as a reporter. He co-anchored MSNBC’s broadcast of the Republican and Democratic political conventions in 2012.
Melvin co-hosted NBC’s annual presentation of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting in December 2020. He stated in March 2022 that he will be quitting his hour of MSNBC Reports to focus on Today.
