Collins was born and raised in Florida by her parents Cathy and Walter Collins. In 2012, she graduated from Northeast High School in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her junior ranking as a high school player earned her a scholarship to the University of Florida. She transferred to the University of Virginia after her freshman year (UVA). In her sophomore and senior years, she won the NCAA singles championship.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in media studies and business from UVA. Her postgraduate plans included professional tennis and business school.

Collins began the year by reaching the final round of qualifying at the Australian Open, where she was defeated in two sets by Denisa Allertová. However, she received a wildcard to the WTA 125 tournament in Newport Beach and won, propelling her to a career-high ranking of 120 at the time.

She reached the quarterfinals of another WTA 125 tournament, this time in Indian Wells, and thus earned a wildcard for the BNP Paribas Open, a Premier Mandatory tournament that also takes place in Indian Wells. There, she won her first WTA Tour match against compatriot Taylor Townsend before going on to beat world No. 14 Madison Keys in straight sets, followed by a win over Sofya Zhuk.

Collins won her first WTA title at the Palermo International, defeating Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the final in straight sets.

She won her second WTA title the following month at the Silicon Valley Classic, defeating Daria Kasatkina in three sets. Her victory in the Silicon Valley Classic was her first WTA 500 title. As a result, on August 9, 2021, she reentered the top 30 at world No. 28.

She then added to her winning streak at the Canadian Open. She defeated Jil Teichmann in the first round before defeating sixth seed Sim/ona Halep in the second. Her winning streak ended in the third round when she was defeated in three sets by Jessica Pegula.
