Kochie as he is popularly called began hosting Sunrise on 4 October 2002 replacing Chris Reason due to a cancer diagnosis. Soon after Sunrise Show became a leading morning show in Australia and their ratings increased.
Why is David ‘Kochie’ Koch Leaving Sunrise?
Kochie announced on air on 28th May 2023 that he will be leaving Sunrise of Seven Network to focus on his family and other business ventures.
Koch began hosting Sunrise in October 2022 making it 21 years of hosting the show. His replacement will be announced on June 5 while his last show will be on Friday, June 9, 2023.
“I have loved every single minute of my time at Sunrise…I’ve been privileged to experience so many adventures, to meet so many incredible people, and to cover so many moments of history in the making.” Koch said during his announcement. “As everyone knows, I’m a finance nerd so you’ll still see me pop up every so often on RBA board meeting days or covering other big financial news, but as a guest rather than host,” he said.
Other Business Ventures
Koch also offers business and financial analysis to a number of media outlets, such as Pacific Magazines, Yahoo Finance, and News Ltd newspapers’ “Your Money” section. Koch introduced Ausbiz, an Australian business and finance streaming platform, in 2020 in collaboration with Kylie Merritt.
He completed his accounting training and served as a cadet in The Australian newspaper’s business section prior to joining BRW magazine shortly after its debut in the early 1980s. Throughout his entire career, David has had his fair share of criticism.
For instance, he received backlash over remarks he made about nursing on January 18, 2013. The arguments started as a consequence of a response to a report about a Queensland mother who was breastfeeding her child at a public pool.
While acknowledging that nursing in public is a mother’s right, Koch said that it’s also polite to do it privately for the sake of other people. Anger was expressed widely in response to the comment, and threats were made that up to 800 breastfeeding mothers would swarm the Sunrise studio at Martin Place. His comments were condemned by media consultant Mia Freedman.
