On August 2021, Murphy announced on air that his time has reached to leave the broadcasting life and enjoy more time with his family. He said;
“I just turned 62 last week. I was actually making my first professional decisions about my life when I was 13, so since I got started early on all this working stuff I sort-of decided maybe it’s a good idea to step back a little bit early and take on the next chapter.”
His colleagues, Matt O’Donnell and Karen Rogers bid him goodbye as they reminisced the moments they shared with their favorite meteorologist. When O’Donnell was hired by 6ABC, he was paired with Murphy to train him to become the best at his job. O’Donnell wrote on Facebook that,
“Bottom line, David always gets the job done, no matter the obstacle, I’ve seen him as a leader and a personal big brother ever since.”
The president of WPVI 6ABC announced that Murphy’s last day will be on September 7th. He also added that the meteorologist has been a huge part of the success of the station and that his work and contribution will always be appreciated. He concluded that;
“However, the best contribution David has made is to show all of us how a true gentleman conducts himself on and off the air. We will miss David as a colleague and friend, and wish him and his family all the best.”
