Murphy’s Career as a Sportscaster

During his time at CN8, Murphy hosted Out of Bounds, an hour-long sports program, that aired at 7 p.m. on weeknights. The program explored the biggest national stories where he focused on topics that affected sports fans in the CN8 viewing area from Maine to Virginia and sought to spark passionate discussion.

Additionally, throughout the year, he participated in CN8’s sports programming as a host or reporter for the network’s live event coverage and specials. He was also the principal sports anchor for the weekday broadcasts of CN8 News at 7 and 10.

Beginning with the 2012 campaign, Murphy worked as a part of the Philadelphia Phillies broadcast crew, giving updates on the game from various spots around the stadium.

He also provided play-by-play occasionally. After the 2020 season, he would no longer serve as a field reporter for the Phillies, according to an announcement made by NBC Sports Philadelphia in August of that year.

Gregg Murphy Health

In December 2021, Gregg Murphy was about to complete a 13-week round of chemotherapy when he headed to Citizens Bank Park for a meeting. He had taken the same drive over the Walt Whitman Bridge three months before when he had received his phone diagnosis.

His doctor called and told him, “Now, what I’m about to tell you is going to scare you.” He revealed to him that he had hairy cell leukemia which was not common but treatable. Murphy did not tell anyone about his illness. In fact, his closest friends, including the other Phillies journalists, were the last people he told after weeks.

He waited until after the baseball season ended to tell his children, Quinn, Matthew, and Colin.  His immune system will be compromised even if the most severe symptoms of leukemia go away for years.

He spent a week in the hospital in October due to the chemotherapy. However, by December, he had become stronger and had changed his focus. When NBC Sports Philadelphia cut its budget in 2020, he lost his job as the team’s sideline reporter for the Phillies.

In 2021, he secured some freelance work as a radio host of weekend pre-and postgame broadcasts. Murphy had been considering how to fully rejoin the broadcasts ever since the day he was laid off because there was a possibility for a more permanent position on the radio team.
