Howard Finkel Career at WWE

Finkel made his debut as a ring announcer at Madison Square Garden on January 17, 1977. He was the World Wide Wrestling Federation’s main ring announcer for its major events by 1979. The following year, he became the first WWE employee and later the company’s longest-serving employee. Throughout his career, his distinct voice was occasionally heard in the title sequences of the company’s several television programs.

His signature call was his declaration of a new champion following a title change, in which he would emphasize the word “new” to create the maximum response from the audience. He invented the phrase “WrestleMania,” as well as Ricky Steamboat’s nickname “Dragon.” In 1984, he replaced Joe McHugh as the WWF’s main ring announcer for television tapings.

Finkel’s role as an announcer was largely separate from the written angles, but he did occasionally become a part of the company’s storylines. Finkel was the announcer to introduce The Undertaker at the 25th anniversary of Monday Night Raw on January 22, 2018, but it was a recording due to his inability to attend the event.
