Jean Goebel, Dan Rather
Rather started his career as an Associated Press correspondent in Huntsville, Texas, in 1950. Later in his career, he worked as a reporter for the Associated Press, various Texas radio stations, as well as the Houston Chronicle. He published an essay about heroin in 1955.
He tested a dosage of the drug under the supervision of the Houston Police Department, which he described as “a special kind of hell.” Rather joined the United States Marine Corps in January 1954 and was assigned to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. However, he was soon released after it was discovered that he had rheumatic fever as a kid, something he had lied about during the recruiting process.
He was videotaped reporting near the front lines during the Soviet–Afghan War while wearing a traditional mujahideen hat and clothes. Rather drew an Evening News viewership and was nicknamed “Gunga Dan.” His acts were published in the American comic strip.
His reports were later proven to have been influenced by Congressman Charlie Wilson (D-Texas), who led a campaign to assist the struggling mujahideen. The CIA launched its largest covert operation to give help and advanced weapons to the mujahideen. The Soviets finally withdrew from Afghanistan.
