Beglin was the last signing of then Liverpool’s manager Bob Paisley in May 1983 from Shamrock Rovers for GB£20,000. Joe Fagan gradually promoted him to the first team in the subsequent 18 months, before new player-manager Kenny Dalglish granted him regular appearances as a replacement for Alan Kennedy in the 1985-86 season.

In that season, Liverpool won both the League Championship and the FA Cup, defeating Merseyside rivals Everton in both. He also made his debut for the Republic of Ireland national football team.
