Jim Donovan Cancer: Exclusive Details of the WKYC’s Leukemia Relapse

Jim began a ten-year fight with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in 2000. The cancer was finally defeated after an operation to transplant bone marrow in the summer of 2011. Dallas Gentry, a prison officer from Virginia, was his donor and a perfect 10-point match for Jim.

Jim came back to the Browns radio booth three months after his transplant and it was not an easy journey. He was diagnosed with melanoma, the most deadly kind of skin cancer, on his earlobe in addition to dealing with fevers. Eventually, the mole was surgically removed.

On June 1, 2023, he stated that he suffered a relapse of leukemia. He revealed this by saying that he sensed something was amiss with his health about a year and a half ago.

Jim added that he had been enduring several treatments, including chemotherapy, since the day he discovered the relapse, but that he would shortly begin more intensive therapies.

“This is going to be kind of a long and winding road through this treatment plan because it’s going to be pretty aggressive. I’ve got to get healthy, got to move on. I know the deal. I’ve done it before and I plan to do it once again,” he said.

Jim also said that he has been receiving treatment for the past year and a half making use of various forms of chemotherapy, both intravenous and oral. He stated that he will continue to serve as the Browns’ broadcaster and voice for as long as he is able.
