Who was Jim Gordon ?

Jim Gordon was an American television and radio newscaster as well as play-by-play sportscaster . He served in the New York City area for nearly 4 decades. He presented the opening broadcast after New York’s WINS radio transitioned from a Top 40 rock music format to all-news in 1965.

Jim Gordon Career as a Sportscaster

Gordon began his career in Syracuse, New York. He was hired by Madison Square Garden in 1955 to work as the radio voice of the Rangers and Knicks, he began calling New York sporting events.

Over the next three decades, he worked in these kind of roles in and out of both radio and television. He conducted pre and post-game segments on WMGM broadcasts of Brooklyn Dodgers baseball games early in his New York radio career.

He also called college football games and boxing exhibitions. In addition to that, he covered riots and blackouts in New York as a news reporter, and hosted WINS’ broadcast of the Apollo 11 moon landing mission on July 20, 1969.

Gordon was appointed as the radio voice of the New York Giants football club in 1977, replacing Marv Albert. In this role, he  called games on both WNEW and WOR for 18 seasons until 1994. After the 1994 season, he was dismissed by WOR and succeeded by Bob Papa, and this was the official end of his journalism career.

Gordon became active in Putnam County politics and community affairs after retiring from television. He served on the Putnam Valley Zoning Board of Appeals, the Putnam Valley Library Board, and as a volunteer firefighter.
