Kaity was raised in Washington, D.C., and was encouraged to pursue a career in journalism by both her mother, a respected broadcaster as well as her great-uncle, Hollington K. Tong, who was both the ambassador of Nationalist China to the United States and a renowned author.
Kaity, a naturalized American, is particularly pleased to have been awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor for what she has accomplished.

Tong recently underwent surgery lately after experiencing the worst health scare of her life after her colon ruptured. She required two procedures to repair an acute gastrointestinal perforation after suffering stomach problems in May 2018.
She expressed gratitude to Dr. Aronoff and the team at Lenox Hill Hospital for saving her life. Tong was also grateful for overcoming the unexpected and potentially fatal sickness during her show.
She shared a photo of herself after Dr. Aronoff operated on her along with a caption that reads; “How can I express my heartfelt appreciation for all your kind words and well wishes on my behalf?”

She began her broadcast journey as a reporter for San Francisco’s KPIX-TV. Originally employed as a writer for the station, Kaity was invited to conduct an on-air test and was promoted on the basis of her performance to a street reporter, with her first story covering the airport’s “new” carts.
Kaity was hired by WABC-TV two years later and relocated to New York, where she started working as a general correspondent and co-anchor of the “Weekend News Edition” before moving on to co-anchor the 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts.
