Kendra Harrison Biography

Kendra “Keni” Harrison is an American hurdler. She broke the world record of 12.21 seconds in the women’s 100 meters hurdles (12.20 Seconds) on July 22, 2016, at the London Müller Anniversary Games. The record was set by Yordanka Donkova 28 years earlier.

Keni is currently competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which began from 23rd July 2021 to August 8, 2021.

Keni was raised by her adoptive parents Gary and Karon Harrison. Gary and Karon Harrison are both retired military. They met at the Navy where they both served for the U.S. Naval force where Karon worked as a physical specialist while Gary was a pilot. Karon now works as an assistant preschool teacher while her husband works for the Transportation Security Administration.

In their early years of marriage, they both agreed that they never want children but ended up having eleven of them, 9 of whom are adopted. They had their first daughter Casey who is now 33 years old and realized they wanted more of the little ones in their home. They have revealed that it was not easy raising eleven children but they just had to find a way.

Keni as they all call her grew in a large family alongside her ten siblings, eight of them also adopted. Her eldest sister is called Casey while her younger sister Kara is 18 years old. Their family is inclusive of children from all races such as Korean, Bolivian, Black, White. Keni and her sister Tasha are eleven days apart as they were adopted on the same day.

Her father bought a used Marriott Hotel transport and changed over it into a family van. They would go pick up Casey, her eldest sister, after high school cross country practice, while yelling her name from their van. Her answer; ‘ You sort of pretend you don’t know the people yelling out the window at you.”

They would buy everything in bulk including toilet paper,  fish sticks, and cereal. They even used nearly seven gallons a week.

The 100 meters obstacle, or 100-meter obstacle, is an Olympic-style sports occasion run for the most part by ladies. For the race, ten obstacles of tallness of 83.8 centimeters (33.0 in) are set along a straight course of 100 meters (109.36 yds).

The American record holder Harrison would now be able to add world record holder to her resume, as she broke the ladies’ 100-meter obstacles world record with a 12.20 run at the London Diamond League meet on Friday evening. Before this, the past world record of 12.21 remained since 1988 and was set by Bulgaria’s Yordanka Donkova.

Keni began as a soccer player and later took up track and field. Her coach encouraged her to hurdle after seeing how fast she was. She was named Gatorade North Carolina Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year in 2011 after winning the 100 m hurdles at the New Balance Nationals.

Since then, she has been breaking records left-right, and center. Her biggest achievement is when she broke the world record of 12.21 seconds which was set by Yordanka Donkova in 1988. She set a record of 12.20 seconds on 22nd July 2016 at the London Müller Anniversary Games.
