In the reboot’s premiere, Ruby comes to the island hoping to have a vacation free from pain and the ravages of her pancreatic cancer diagnosis. She and her husband Mel find a literal fountain of youth on the island, and she gets a tattoo (get it?). Ultimately, she decides to stay on the island to help Elena. “Elena really sees her as someone who has an opportunity to live again in a whole new way. And there aren’t that many people who come to the island who could do that,” says Fain.
“In our mythology, there is always a Roarke family member who is the custodian of the island,” Fain explains, “and that person always has a second. That second always has a very particular tattoo—which, yes, we took from the character Tattoo [from the original series].” She adds, “The island chooses the person that’s the right person for that particular Roarke. Ruby is the right person for Elena, and we’ll see their relationship grow over the course of the season in a beautiful way.”
