In February 2016, Stephens released her first single, “No More Talking.” On the 2016 single “Tough on the Internet,” she collaborated with Lil Niqo, a fellow The Rap Game competitor. At the 2016 Georgia Music Awards, she also received the Youth Hip Hop/R&B Award. On October 2, 2016, she released her first mixtape, Miss Mulatto.

Her second mixtape, “Latto Let Em Know,” was released in April 2017. Molly Brazy, Lil Key, Crucial, and Silentó were among the artists featured on the tape. The single “Response Diss” is a diss song directed at Young Lyric, a fellow The Rap Game competitor. Following criticism for the racially charged nature of her name, Latto confirmed in various interviews in May 2021 that she had officially settled on a new stage name. On May 18, it was revealed that Mulatto’s name had been changed to simply Latto on streaming platforms. To accompany the announcement of her new name, she released a new single titled “The Biggest.”

Stephens appeared as a contestant on Jermaine Dupri and Queen Latifah’s Lifetime reality show The Rap Game in 2016. Over the course of eight weeks, the boot camp-style series followed young aspiring rappers as they competed against one another.

Latto won the competition overall, going by the stage name “Miss Mulatto” at the time. Dupri offered her a recording contract with So So Def Records, but she turned it down, claiming it wasn’t enough money, and instead chose to be an independent artist.
