Zeldin expressed his intention to run for governor of New York in April 2022. He managed to defeat three opponents in the Republican gubernatorial party primaries, to win the nomination of the Republican Party and the Conservative Party.

An opinion poll conducted by Siena College showed that Governor Kathy now has a clear 17 percent point lead over Lee Zeldin.
According to the poll, Ms. Hochul, a Democrat from Buffalo running for her first full term, has gained support from the public since a Siena College poll from August that showed her leading by 14 points.
The poll was perhaps the most recent indication of Mr. Zeldin’s huge task in New York, where Democrats outnumber Republicans by a two to one margin. Republican governors haven’t been elected to lead the state since George E. Pataki, who left office in 2006.
