Von Dohlen was raised in the small Texas village of Goliad. He once dreamed of becoming a jockey, but as he grew bigger, his ambition was out of reach. In 1983’s Tender Mercies, which won an Academy Award and starred Robert Duval, he made his acting debut.
He portrayed Reggie as an adult in Beautiful Loser and was a nominee for the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals’ Dramatic Competition in the film Teeth in 2007. He portrayed Elder Daniel in Downstream in 2010 and Sheriff Jack Carter in the short film Night Blind that same year (2010).
The Emmy-winning Kent State on NBC was his debut appearance on television (1981). He is well recognized for playing the agoraphobic orchid enthusiast Harold Smith in David Lynch and Mark Frost’s 1990 ABC television series Twin Peaks.
He appeared in the BBC’s Red Dwarf series V episode Back to Reality in 1992 as a government agent of a fascist regime. He made an appearance in episode 12 of Seth McFarlane’s sci-fi show “The Orville” on Fox in 2017 as the priest Valondis.
In the theater, Von Dohlen has written parts for the New York performances of Richard Greenberg’s Asian Shade, The Maderati, The Team, Twister, and other plays.
