Mr. Terrell also hosts the Cumulus Media podcast, Leo Terrell: America’s Fair Minded Civil Rights Attorney, in addition to his role with the network. As a member of the California Bar since 1990, he has served in a variety of leadership roles at organizations such as the Black-Korean Alliance, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and California’s Statewide Commission Against Hate Crimes.

In addition, being a member of the NAACP, he often supplied pro bono legal services. He has also delivered professional legal and civil rights analysis on a variety of renowned television shows, including ABC’s Nightline, CNN’s Larry King Live, and NBC’s Today.

Terrell and former Los Angeles Superior Court judge Burton Katz co-hosted the weekday talk show Terrell & Katz, which started on KMPC radio in Los Angeles on June 3, 1996.  Terrell & Katz was a point-counterpoint show in which he was the liberal and Katz was the conservative.

They moved to weekends on KABC on October 5, 1996. He had a weekend legal show on KABC until August 15, 2010, and he is still a recurrent guest host on KABC’s The Peter Tilden Show. He has returned to KABC with a new weekday afternoon drive show named Leo 2.0 Live @ 5 as of July 2021.

Terrell was admitted to the California Bar on December 4, 1990.
He was the Chairman of the Black-Korean Alliance, a member of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) Advisory Board, and a member of the Statewide Commission Against Hate Crimes. He joined the NAACP in 1990 and provided pro bono legal services to the organization.

Terrell resigned from the NAACP after expressing support for Carolyn Kuhl, a Los Angeles County judge nominated by President George W. Bush to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit whose appointment was filibustered in the United States Senate. Terrell ran for the Los Angeles City Council District 10 seat in 2003, finishing sixth out of seven candidates.

Leo Terrell and Simmons Case

Terrell represented Kumasi Simmons, a former football player from Compton’s Centennial High School who was expelled for punching a referee in 1995. Simmons accused the referee of using racist language. Terrell said that the Beverly Hills Police Department intimidated witnesses who could support Simmons’ story.

Terrell petitioned the Los Angeles Police Commission in 1999 to hear testimony from witnesses who said that a homeless woman, Margaret Laverne Mitchell, was running when police officers shot her. He asked for a probe of wrongdoing by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department trainees in 2012.
