Ramos began his journalism career in Mexico where he worked at XEW-TV when he was 24 years old. He left Mexico for the United States on a student visa and was later hired by KMEX-TV. While at KMEX, Ramos said that he felt he could freely express himself unlike in his home country Mexico. He was later named the morning host of Mundo Latino three years after joining the station.
In 1987, he joined Univision Network and was the anchor for Noticiero Univision, a nightly Spanish language newscast, alongside colleague María Elena Salinas. Ramos frequently appears as a pundit on CNN, and MNBC and also writes a bilingual newspaper column that is published internationally.
