Who was Tom Smothers?

Tommy Smothers was an American comedian, composer, and musician. He is best known for being one half of the musical comedy duo, the Smothers Brothers, along with his younger brother Dick. In 1969, Smothers played acoustic guitar alongside John Lennon during the recording of Lennon’s song “Give Peace a Chance”.

Tom was born on February 2, 1937, in New York City, New York to his parents Ruth and  Thomas B. Smothers who was a major in the army. He studied at Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, California, and later went to San José State University.

Tom was raised alongside his brother Dick and sister Sherry Smother. Tom and his brother initially began as folk singers but later discovered their talent in comedy. After breaking into TV with their music, their “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour” became a hit.

In 1967, Tom Smothers negotiated creative control over their upcoming CBS variety show, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. The documentary “Smothered” depicts how the brothers, especially Tom, battled against CBS censors to include references to religion, drugs, sex, and the Vietnam War in their show.

Smothers is widely quoted as saying: “The only valid censorship of ideas is the right of people not to listen.” The brothers’ oppositional politics led to their show’s demise, with David Steinberg later claiming “The most innovative variety show on television shut down because of political pressure”.

During the same years, Tom wrote and recorded mainstream songs, such as “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.” Tom has since stated, “When the Smothers Brothers came on the air we had no political point of view or social consciousness, it just evolved as the show was on the air
