Mark Woodley KWWL | The Waterloo Weather Scene
On December 23, 2022, a huge winter storm battered Waterloo, Iowa and as a result, Mark was sent to report live from the streets of Waterloo for more than three hours. He did not find this task appealing. He was given this task because sporting events were canceled in Iowa.
His efforts to communicate efficiently got more difficult as time went by. His increasingly anxious video broadcasts for KWWL shot from a very cold and snow-covered highway, duly went viral and received 27 million views by December 24. He talked about the strange circumstances and the long hours of the assignment.
As time went by, he said; “I usually do sports and everything is canceled here for the next couple of days. I’m used to these evening shows that are only 30 minutes long, and generally, on those shows, I am inside. This is a really long show, so tune in for the next couple of hours to watch me progressively get crankier and crankier.”
This was followed by a question that went viral. He asked; “Can I go back to my regular job? I’m pretty sure you guys added an extra hour to this hour just because somebody likes torturing me.” Later, Woodley told CNN, which is associated with KWWL, that he was unaware that the channel had an assignment slot at 3.30 am or that he would be accepting it until the previous evening.
In response to suggestions from viewers for him to work exclusively as a full-time weather presenter, Woodley said: “We’re a bit short-handed like every newsroom is in the country, that’s why I was in this situation. I’m a team player. If asked, sure, I’ll do it, but that would be my absolute nightmare. I hope to God they do not ask me to ever do that again.”
