Mike Thomas Career

Mike was always fascinated by the weather, even as a young boy. Growing up in the tiny Maryland town of Beltsville, Prince George’s County he still clearly recalls the EF3 tornado that devastated his primary school in College Park several years ago. He followed the meteorology career because he was curious to fully understand the catastrophic event.

After his graduation, he started working at Commodity Weather Group in Bethesda, Maryland, where he was primarily responsible for learning about extended range, seasonal, and weather model analysis forecasting strategies.

Mike forecasted and advised other meteorologists and commodity traders on the New York Stock Exchange. His projections were published in several publications including USA Today, MSNBC, CNBC, Bloomberg, and Reuters.

Mike began his career in television when he was hired as a part-time weekend morning meteorologist by the FOX 5 Weather Team in the summer of 2014. He returned to the team full-time in the autumn, reconnecting with his former mentor Tucker Barnes. He worked as a weather intern at FOX 5 under the watchful eye of Tony Perkins and Tucker Barnes.

Mike spent the first eight years of his career as a member of the FOX 5 Morning Team, covering everything from blizzards to hurricanes to tornado outbreaks. His favorite moment of his career was the great Blizzard of 2016. He also stepped in on “Good Day DC” and occasionally covered traffic and field reporting.

In spring 2022, Mike got promoted to the position of evening meteorologist, taking over for longtime FOX 5 Chief Meteorologist Sue Palka. In addition, he is a frequent writer for Fox5DC.com and the FOX Weather Network’s “Weather Champion” for the Mid-Atlantic region.
