Monica Robins Brain Tumor
Doctors diagnosed Monica with a sphenoid wing orbital meningioma in 2019. She had a growth in her skull that was developing close to her carotid artery and optic nerve. Doctors from Cleveland Clinic attempted to remove as much of the tumor as they could in October of that year in the hopes that it would be benign and that it wouldn’t come back.
The tumor proved benign, after all. However, the location of a brain tumor was crucial, and even benign tumors can be fatal. The remaining tumor on Monica’s optic nerve, located 3 millimeters from her carotid artery at the back of her left eye and eye socket, had to be removed during the initial surgery.
Monica had an MRI every six months to make sure the leftover tumor wasn’t spreading. A scan in 2021 showed the tumor had indeed moved from her eye socket into her cavernous sinus, which also houses her carotid artery. She qualified for transorbital neuroendoscopic surgery, also known as TONES surgery.
To remove the tumor this time, doctors would cut through Monica’s eyelid and if necessary, a piece of Monica’s rib would have to be taken out and used for facial reconstruction. This time, Monica’s surgery happened in five hours, and her hospital stay was relatively short.
Unlike her initial surgery before the pandemic, she started her rehabilitation at home, although she was incapable of hosting any guests. Apart from her spouse Deke, Monica would be cut off from friends and family due to the wound in her eyelid, which increased the danger of infection.
