Who is Neal Katyal?

Neal Katyal is a corporate lawyer and scholar from the United States. He is currently an associate at Hogan Lovells and the Paul and Patricia Saunders Professor of National Security Law at Georgetown University Law Center.

He joined the board of Social Capital Ventures Inc. in 2022 and is now a partner with venture capital company Social Capital, run by Chamath Palihapitiya. Katyal has argued matters before the US Supreme Court more than any other minority attorney in American history.

The term “extremist centrist” has been used to characterize him. Although he is regarded as one of the best lawyers in the country, progressives have been critical of him for opposing workers’ and human rights in cases including Janus v. AFSCME, Epic Systems Corp. v. Lewis, and Nestlé USA, Inc. v. Doe.

He manages the appellate practice that was formerly led by John Roberts and focuses on constitutional law, national security, legal representation for criminals, and the protection of intellectual property.

Katyal attended the Jesuit Catholic secondary school Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Illinois. He was active in the Phi Beta Kappa honor society, the Sigma Nu fraternity, and the Dartmouth Forensic Union at Dartmouth College, where he earned his degree in 1991.

Afterward, he enrolled at Yale Law School. During his time in law school, Akhil Amar and Bruce Ackerman, with whom he worked together on publications for law review and magazines of political opinion in 1995 and 1996, taught Katyal and he served as the editor of the Yale Law Journal.

After earning his JD in 1995, Katyal worked as a law clerk for Justice Stephen Breyer of the United States Supreme Court, and as time went by, he was hired by Judge Guido Calabresi of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Neal Katyal Political Affiliation

Katyal has long been affiliated with the Democratic party. He was given the task of writing a report about the requirement for increased pro bono legal services by President Bill Clinton.

From May 2010 until June 2011, Katyal served as the interim solicitor general for the United States during the presidency of Barack Obama. Prior to this, Katyal worked as a lawyer in the U.S. Justice Department’s office of the Solicitor General and as its Principal Deputy Solicitor General.
