Richard Hammond Accident
Hammond started his journey with Top Gear in 2002, after the show began in its new format. Fans and his fellow presenters have occasionally referred to him as “The Hamster” because of his to his name and little stature in comparison to May and Clarkson.
He returned in the opening episode of season 9 to a hero’s welcome, complete with dancing girls, steps modeled after airplanes, and fireworks, following a high-speed dragster crash while filming in September 2006 close to York.
As Richard recounted the day’s events, the crowd excitedly cheered. The event also featured photos of the disaster, which had garnered headlines around the world.
He later asked that the collision never be brought up again, but all three Top Gear hosts have subsequently made jokes about it during the news part of the show.

Why did Hammond leave Top Gear?
On March 31, 2015, Hammond’s contract with Top Gear came to an end. Although friendship would be a comforting explanation for his leaving, it’s possible that there were other factors that kept the three of them together.
He ruled out the prospect of continuing to host Top Gear in April, tweeting that “amidst all this discussion of us “quitting” or not: there’s nothing for me to “quit” not going to quit my friends anyway”
