It was always assumed that Smith was gay for a long time, but he was pretty much silent about his personal life and didn’t come out as gay until 2017. In an interview from October 2016, he discussed his sexual orientation, and in it, he denied that Ailes was homophobic while also confirming that he was a gay man.
He said, “When someone questioned me about whether or not (former Fox News CEO) Roger Ailes had abused me, I responded, “No. The truth is that he was always kind to me.” He added, “I believe it was regarded that I outed myself when I spoke the truth. I didn’t even consider it because I didn’t believe I was accepted.”
Shepard described the beliefs he was raised with, in another interview from 2018 as follows; “You don’t talk about your money, you don’t talk about your politics, and you don’t talk about your sex. Everyone wants to discuss such topics right now, but I’m not one of them. Will not take action.”
Of course, that didn’t stop people from asking him to discuss each of those topics. He revealed his long-term partner Gio in that same interview, saying; “I don’t mind talking about it. That’s simply my own life, you understand. And I have nothing to hide.”
