Ifill started her career right after completing her studies at New York University. She was hired as an assistant legal counsel at LDF, where she fought for the freedom to vote matters. One of her most prominent cases involved an attempt to prevent the construction of a landfill near St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church in Harford County.

Ifill and her students organized a demonstration that included both black and white locals, and she gave them free legal representation throughout the 21-year-long dispute resolution.

She and her clients found out that some black Civil War veterans’ remains had been laid to rest in the church’s graveyard, which had been built by emancipated slaves in the 19th century.

In 2022, she announced her decision to step down as the Legal Defense Fund’s director. The company’s workforce, budget, and endowment increased fivefold in the nine years she served as its leader.
