Who is Former “Smash Mouth” star, Steve Harwell?

Steve Harwell is a retired American singer. He is primarily known as the former frontman and main vocalist of the rock band Smash Mouth. Until Harwell’s departure, he and bassist Paul De Lisle were the only two consistent members of the band.

Smash Mouth was founded by Greg Camp, Harwell, Kevin Coleman, and Paul De Lisle. In 2006, he appeared on the sixth season of VH1’s reality show The Surreal Life. He has been featured on several television and radio shows, and he also appeared in the 2001 film Rat Race. His most famous tune is “All-Star.”

On August 27, 2016, while performing with Smash Mouth in Urbana, Illinois, Harwell collapsed on stage and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. De Lisle assumed the vocals as the band carried out the performance without him.

Presley fought till the very end, until July 29, 2001, when he passed away. His brain swelled because it took so long to recover from his first collapse, according to Harwell.

Harwell said; “We knew we couldn’t bring him back. His eyes were not dilating, and we knew things were going south. It finally got to an extent where we decided not to put him through it any longer. Michele and I agreed to remove him from the machines. The little guy fought all he could.”

Upon his death, Harwell and Michelle Laroque established The Presley Scott Research Foundation for Leukemia, which has since been managed by Mrs. Laroque.

What Happened To Steve Harwell?

Smash Mouth manager, Robert Hayes said that Steve had entered hospice care. The announcement comes after a prolonged fight against various health conditions which forced him to step down from music in 2021.

In a statement made on September 4, 2023, Hayes stated that Harwell was in hospice under the care of his fiance and that he only had a week or so to live. He is in his final stage of chronic liver failure.

According to Hayes, “Steve’s unique voice is one of the most instantly known voices of his generation. As much as he enjoyed performing, Steve loved his fans. Sadly, Steve will only be with us for a brief period of time even though he is still with us. I will just add that we would appreciate folks respecting Steve and his family’s privacy at this trying time.”
