In 1986, while working in the family business, Irwin founded Cougar Country to re-educate and release predator species such as foxes, raccoons, bears, bobcats, and cougars back into the wild. She soon found herself handling 300 animals every year.
Her life was hectic because she was still assisting her father with the family business, rehabilitating animals through Cougar Country, and working at the vet facility. She also had 15 cats, many birds, and a dog of her own.
Terri went on a tour of Australia in 1991, and while touring wildlife rehabilitation centers, she met Steve Irwin, whose father had created the Australia Zoo as Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park.
On their honeymoon, they shot their first television documentary. The film, shot by John Stainton, became the first episode of The Crocodile Hunter, which went on to become a hit in the United States.
