Vicente Gonzalez Texas
As a rookie to politics, Gonzalez launched his bid in 2016 for the 15th congressional district of Texas’s United States House of Representatives after the sitting representative, Rubén Hinojosa, said he would not seek reelection.
Gonzalez declared his intention to run for reelection in the 34th district in November 2021, following Texas’s redistricting process based on the 2020 census. Despite the neighboring 34th district becoming considerably more Democratic, the 15th district got more Republican.
Gonzalez chose not to run and supported Democrat Dan Sanchez in the subsequent special election on June 14, 2022, which was held in the 34th’s older, more contested boundaries. Vela resigned earlier on March 31, 2022.
However, Flores decided to run in the special election and defeated Sanchez with 50.9% of the vote to 43.4%. Gonzalez and Flores will therefore contest in the unusual situation of two incumbents vying for office in the same district on November 8, 2022.
