Richardson became a sole proprietor on October 26, 1993, when the Carolina Panthers were unanimously selected as the NFL’s 29th team, making him the first former player since George Halas to hold that position.

He was recognized to be among the most prominent NFL owners, along with Robert Kraft of the New England Patriots and Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys.

He helped to negotiate a new players’ agreement and lock out the NFL players in 2011. Richardson mostly remained unnoticed and hardly ever got in the way of the Panthers’ regular business.

It has long been believed that Richardson wanted his sons, Mark and Jon, to take over the team after him. Nevertheless, both abruptly left their positions before the 2009 campaign, apparently at Richardson’s request, and Jon passed away from cancer in 2013.

Richardson reportedly wanted to sell the franchise after his death, but only to a buyer who would maintain the team and employment in Charlotte, according to WBTV in Charlotte on January 16, 2013.
