Wedeman is a senior foreign correspondent for CNN who works out of Beirut. Before his current assignment, he was stationed in Rome, Italy, where he reported on the migrant crisis, other Italian issues the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, and the appointment of Pope Francis.
Apart from Europe, Wedeman has reported on the Syrian civil war, the military-backed removal of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, the 2014 Gaza War, the Iraqi war against ISIS, and the failed coup attempt in Turkey in July 2016.
Until recently, he was stationed in Cairo, where he oversaw the network’s broadcast of President Hosni Mubarak’s ouster. Within a few days, he became the first Western journalist to enter Libya, where he covered the campaign to topple Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi’s dictatorship for several months in 2011.
His previous position was at CNN’s Jerusalem desk, where he was responsible for covering Palestinian issues. In July 2007, Wedeman broke the story as the first reporter when BBC journalist Alan Johnston was freed from captivity in Gaza.
Before transferring to CNN, Wedeman was a freelance print journalist based in Amman, Jordan, covering news in Syria, Jordan, the Palestinian territories, and Sudan. Along with his current job with the French oil prospecting business near Raqqa, Syria, he was also employed as a demolition specialist at an international agricultural research facility in Aleppo, Syria.
