Who is Emily Maitlis?

Emily Maitlis is a British journalist, news presenter, and documentary filmmaker. She works as a host for LBC Radio’s daily podcast The News Agents. Up until the end of 2021, she served as the primary anchor of the BBC Two news as well as the current affairs program Newsnight.

Maitlis is currently 53 years old. She was born on September 6, 1970, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. She grew up with her two older sisters, Nicky and Sally, in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Her father, Peter Michael Maitlis was a British organometallic chemist. Peter passed away on 18 May 2022, at the age of 89.

Emily Maitlis Met Her Husband in Hong Kong

Maitlis met her husband, Mark Gwynne at the time she was working in Hong Kong. Mark is an investment manager by profession. In most cases, it is always the men who propose to their women but this was different.

Maitlis proposed to her husband in 2000 while on vacation in Mauritius. Fast forward, the couple has two sons together namely; Milo and Max.

What Happened To Emily Maitlis?

In 2002, it was revealed that Maitlis had been the victim of a decade-long stalking campaign by Edward Vines, an old buddy from her time in college who would show up at her workplace.

Fast forward to September 2019, while imprisoned at HM Prison Ranby in Nottinghamshire, Edward pleaded not guilty to violating an order prohibiting him from contacting Maitlis by writing a letter with the aim of having it delivered to her.

As a result, he was given a new three-year prison sentence in February 2020. Vines was sentenced to 8 years in jail after being found guilty in July 2022 of trying to violate a restraining order by sending letters to Maitlis and her mother while he was incarcerated.

Why Did Emily Maitlis Leave BBC?

Maitlis announced her resignation from the BBC on February 22, 2022, and she later signed a contract with Global, the parent company of LBC, to launch a daily podcast and joint radio program with former BBC journalist Jon Sopel.

On August 30, 2022, Global Media started The News Agents, a daily podcast hosted by Maitlis, Jon Sopel, and Lewis Goodall. New episodes are broadcast every weekday afternoon.

The FBI investigation into Donald Trump’s handling of presidential records was the main topic of the first episode, “Trump – Prison or President?,” which also featured former White House Director of Communications Anthony Scaramucci as a guest.

Maitlis earned between £260,000 and £264,999 in 2019, making her one of the highest-paid employees of the BBC’s news and current affairs team. She earned over £325,000 in salary as of 2023, and she currently has a net worth of nearly $2 million.
