Joe Rogan Career in Comedy

Rogan had no plans to become a professional stand-up comedian and instead sought a career in kickboxing. From an early age, he was a fan of comedy, and comedian Richard Pryor’s film Live on the Sunset Strip had an impact on him. “In such an entertaining manner nothing has ever made me laugh that hard.”

Rogan’s gym and Taekwondo schoolmates, whom he would make laugh with impressions and jokes, persuaded him to try stand-up comedy.

On August 27, 1988, at the age of 21, he did his debut stand-up performance during an open-mic night at Boston’s Stitches comedy club, after six months of preparing material and rehearsing his delivery.

As a means of survival, Rogan did many jobs while living in Boston and working on his stand-up, including teaching martial arts at Boston University and in Revere, delivering newspapers, driving a limousine, and doing construction work.

Meanwhile, his blue comedy approach got him to work at bachelor parties and strip clubs. He was “scraping and digging” for money as a full-time comedian and lived with his grandfather in Newark for the first six months. Later in his career, he acknowledged Richard Jeni, Lenny Bruce, Sam Kinison and Bill Hicks as his influences in comedy.

Rogan started his career as backstage and post-fight commentator for the MMA company Ultimate Fighting Championship. His debut show was at UFC12: Judgement Day in Dothan, Alabama on February 7, 1997.

After Zuffa acquired the UFC in 2001, Rogan attended multiple events and became close with Dana White, the UFC’s new president, who offered him a role as a color commentator. Rogan, on the other hand, was initially rejected because he “just wanted to go to the fights and drink.”

White was able to recruit him for free in 2002 in return for premium event tickets for himself and his colleagues. He accepted money for the role as a commentator after roughly 15 free appearances, working alongside Mike Goldberg until the end of 2016.

However, it was to be exclusive to the platform effective January 20, 2021, according to the terms of the agreement.
