Liz Bishop’s Career
Liz Bishop started her career as a television broadcaster in September 1973 as a college student without any prior on-air experience. She broke the gender barrier after completing a two-week training program at WRGB to become the station’s new weekend sportscaster, becoming one of the few female sports reporters in the country.
Liz became a pioneer of what is largely regarded as the first all-woman newscast in the 1970s over the course of the forty years that followed, which she spent at the very station where her career began.
She was the only television sports reporter chosen to cover the 1981 South African Springboks rugby match in Glenville, New York. The game was played undercover after an apartheid-related bombing of the Schenectady League office the day before.

On September 11, 2001, she was one of the few reporters present at Ground Zero, where she followed the Capital District Search and Rescue team as they bravely attempted to save people after the World Trade Center collapsed and reported on their efforts.
She is especially happy with the opportunities that her job has afforded her to give back to the community. As a longstanding co-host of the MDA telethon and co-host of the stage program CBS6 Melodies of Christmas, Liz helped generate tens of millions of dollars for both causes. She has also been on the board of directors of the Empire State Youth Orchestra for more than 25 years.
