Alnwick studied at Fort Hunt High School. She then graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Journalism. She also has a BS/BA Cum Laude in Journalism and Fine Art from James Madison University.

Alnwick first worked at USAF as a Clerk Typist where she spent college summers working at Pentagon w secret clearance. Her duties were to pick up temp work in legal, academic, association, and charity offices in DC/VA.
Melanie began her journalism career in 1991 at WUSA TV where she worked as an associate producer. Even though it was a minor role, she got to learn so much about how TV stations worked and also learned from more experienced journalists while there.
Melanie then joined NBC ENCN-TV Raleigh as a reporter. While there, she learned how to shoot a gun, discovered what a hog waste lagoon is, and witnessed one of the state’s last live tobacco auctions. During the Kosovo conflict, she also organized a fantastic trip with the US Air Force to Bosnia, Albania, Germany, and Italy. She had the privilege of flying in the cockpit of a C-17 across the Atlantic.
