Who is Richard Engel?
Richard Engel is the chief foreign correspondent for NBC News. He was announced as the new foreign correspondent for the station on April 18, 2008, after serving as the Middle East correspondent and Beirut bureau chief for the network.
Engel covered the onset of the 2003 Iraq War for ABC News while working as a freelance journalist in Baghdad before joining NBC in May 2003. He is renowned for having reported on the Syrian Civil War, the Arab Spring, and the Iraq War.

His academic performance improved, and he started to become a favorite by his classmates. He then studied in Italy during his junior year of high school, where he perfected his Italian.
Engel started to understand how other cultures and nations affected his decision-making about his future job. He later enrolled at Stanford University, where he occasionally wrote for The Stanford Daily. He graduated from Stanford in 1996 with a B.A. in international relations.

Engel married Mary Forrest, a producer, in May 2015. This is his second marriage and the couple is still together. Their first child, a son named Henry was born in September 2015 while their second child, Theodore was born in August 2019.
It was discovered that Rett syndrome, an extremely uncommon genetic condition in men, was present at birth in Henry Engel. Sadly, Henry passed away in August 2022 at the age of 6.

Engel moved to Cairo after receiving his degree from Stanford because he believed the next story that would make headlines would originate there. He cited “the possibility of learning about new subjects and having the privilege of riding the train of history rather than watching it pass” as the reason he was drawn to journalism.
He initially spent four years in Cairo working as a freelance journalist, learning Egyptian Arabic, and living in a run-down seven-story walk-up. At the time American soldiers invaded Iraq, Engel was a freelance correspondent for ABC News.
He continued to serve as the chief Iraq correspondent for NBC while reporting on the ongoing war in Baghdad. He remained in Iraq and was one of the last Western journalists there when other media agencies withdrew their staff shortly after the shelling started in March 2003.
As a result, Engel covered all major turning points in the war, such as the first free election in Iraq and Saddam Hussein’s detention, trial, and execution.

What Happened To Richard Engels’ Son?
Henry was diagnosed with Rett syndrome as an infant after failing to meet certain milestones in his growth. In 2018, Engels took Henry to the Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children’s Hospital for further assessment.
They used a variety of therapies to keep Henry’s body moving and mind busy, such as learning to walk with a walker, talking using cards, and smothering attention on his younger brother, Theo.
On August 18, 2022, The Engels reported that Henry had died after a fight with Rett syndrome, a rare inherited neurological condition with no known treatment or cure.
