Engel moved to Cairo after receiving his degree from Stanford because he believed the next story that will make headlines would originate there.

He cited “the possibility of learning about new subjects and having the privilege of riding the train of history rather than watching it pass” as the reason he was drawn to journalism.

He initially spent four years in Cairo working as a freelance journalist, learning Egyptian Arabic, and living in a run-down seven-story walk-up. At the time American soldiers invaded Iraq, Engel was a freelance correspondent for ABC News.

He continued to serve as the chief Iraq correspondent for NBC while reporting on the ongoing war in Baghdad. He remained in Iraq and was one of the last Western journalists there when other media agencies withdrew their staff shortly after the shelling started in March 2003.

As a result, Engel covered all major turning points in the war, such as the first free election in Iraq and Saddam Hussein’s detention, trial, and execution.
