He has reported on Florida politics since 1991, covering all of the state’s gubernatorial elections since 1994 and the presidential campaigns of Marco Rubio, Donald Trump, and Jeb Bush in 2016.
In 2019, he came up with the short film “The Homestead Letters” for CBS. The film examined the thoughts and reactions of nearby schoolchildren upon discovering that they were residing close to a camp for migrants, where children were being kept apart from their parents by the Trump Administration at the border.

DeFede began working for CBS News Miami in January 2006, where he currently hosts the public affairs show “Facing South Florida” on Sunday mornings and covers investigative stories. He is a reporter, writer, and producer for CBS News Miami.
He has worked on several documentaries for the network, including “The Everglades: Where Politics, Money and Race Collide,” an hour-long documentary about the 2016 Florida environmental calamity brought on by deadly blue-green algae in Lake Okeechobee.
DeFede created three one-hour programs in 2021 and 2022 about the 98 people who died in the Surfside building collapse namely: “Bonded By Tragedy: 30 Days in Surfside,” “Surviving Surfside: Deven’s Story,” and “Surviving Surfside: Year One.”
