When Thomas realized she needed amplification to succeed in her first TV part, she was 23 years old and had just received her first hearing aid for her left ear. Her parents helped her in covering the expense because, as a young adult just starting her profession, she was unable to do so.
When she was 26 years old, she discovered she was lacking a lot of knowledge, which brought difficulties at work. It was time to get hearing aids for both ears. She participated in a vocational rehabilitation program that required her to fill out paperwork, speak with audiologists, and undergo more hearing tests.
Thomas wrote a book for children called The Heart of Hearing to help generate money for this purpose and combat the stigma frequently associated with hearing loss and hearing aids.
