Jose was among the journalists who helped to establish Telemundo News in 1987 by launching Noticias Telemundo/HBC. He later made a name for himself in Miami as a television news reporter, working for WTVJ from 1988 until he got employed by CBS in May 1996.
He made history in August 1996 when he started hosting the CBS News show This Morning, becoming the first Cuban-American to serve as the host of a network news program.
